This was quite helpful, but just this morning, the bots came back. Now, I think the reason was because my Q & A was still pretty easy, so I fixed it. However, I still have a few questions.Banning a user does not remove them. What it does do is prevent them using the account for any reason. Bans can even be time limited.
For spammers I just click their username to open their profile, click the "administer user" link. You need admin rights for this link to be there, by default moderators will not have this link but it can be setup so they do with access to just the user pages in the ACP.
1. Under basic tools select "Move all posts", I move them to private trash forum. The one caveat here is a user may have replied to the post or quoted it and that will not be removed.
2. Again under basic tools select "Ban by Useranme"
3. For third time under basic tools select "Deactivate account" This eliminates anything that might still be viewable like their profile.
By keeping the account instead of deleting it this prevents them from using same email for new registration. The dedicated trash forum can be set to prune, I have mine set at 2 years. Once the spam post(s) is pruned their post count goes to 0. Every so I often I will go into the prune users panel and remove accounts with no activity in two years with 0 posts.
1 - Is it possible to deactivate more than one account at a time?
2 - Why would I move these posts to a private trash forum, and not just delete them? After all, these are drug bots that are posting links to drug sites.
