Extension Requests • Re: Ruminations on Facebook Login

Once more, with flailing!

I've applied for, and received, a "business account" with Facebook. This permits the user who goes to my Forum from Facebook to optionally register on the fly for an account. Using either the built-in Oauth feature of phpBB, or the OneAll Social Login extension, a request is posted to Facebook for credentials. The user is prompted by Facebook to agree; if they do, the Facebook username and picture is returned. OneAll additionally requests email address; unlike the phpBB built-in, it actually converts the picture to an avatar, creates the account with the supplied email address and logs the user in! The built-in still requires the user to register, and subsequently links the accounts.

I like that OneAll removes the registration impediment. But I don't like that the exchange has to be mediated by their site; or, that the free version imposes a limit on the number of users.

It seems that way back when, someone else went down this road with a mod to 3.0.x - viewtopic.php?t=2097905

The mod was abandoned, as was the download site itself. The writer hasn't been heard from in over a decade. Fortunately, the code has been preserved on github: https://github.com/thiyagarajan/svmods- ... -for-phpbb

phpBB has changed, and no doubt so has the SDK for Facebook. Still, it looks like the bones are there for a direct connection between Facebook and phpBB, without a third party mediator (OneAll). That's what I'm looking for - an extension that does what OneAll's Social Login does, without having to rely on OneAll.
